To the editor:
Rep. Lora Reinbold is truly bold for defying her caucus and voting against an unsustainable budget that would bankrupt Alaska in less than three years! We need to end voting by caucus.
Once our budget reserve is gone, then what shall we do, if Anchorage and Seward are completely destroyed again in an earthquake? Our precious savings should be reserved for natural disasters and military invasions and not wasted against permanent re-alignments in world oil prices.
The problem with electing representatives without term limits is that they constantly act in fear of being voted out of office by voters who never want to pay more taxes and who never want to lose their services and benefits.
So, let’s convene a long overdue State Constitutional Convention to impose a two-term limit on all elected officials, to impose a balanced budget amendment, except for natural disasters and military invasions, and to phase out paying Permanent Fund dividends to people who neither risked a penny nor did anything to deserve it, as our state faces bankruptcy within three years, under present “leadership.”
