PALMER — Shelley Hughes, the first-term state senator for Seat F, representing the Palmer and Chugiak areas, announced on Wednesday that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
"I just learned that I have breast cancer. I'm going to beat it,” Hughes, 59, said on her Facebook page. "I wanted to be able to let people know I'm going into this strong, I'm in good shape, I've got a good attitude.”
Hughes said she did not know the type or stage of the cancer, which was found during a routine mammogram.
She said she was be returning to Juneau on Wednesday for what is expected to be a Thursday that may include the passing of a capital budget compromise between the Senate and the House.
Prior to running for Senate last fall, Hughes represented District 8 in the State House.
