State soccer: Wasilla boys move into fourth-place match; Valley teams 1-3 during second day of tourney

JUNEAU — It was another rough afternoon for Mat-Su Valley teams during the second day of the ASAA/First National Bank State Soccer Championships in Juneau.

The four Valley teams competing in the championships were a combined 1-3 for the second straight day. The Wasilla boys were the lone local team to post a victory on Friday, scoring a 3-2 overtime win over West Anchorage in consolation semifinals.

Senior Ray Keown scored on a header set up by a Dustin Hout corner kick just before the whistle sounded during the second 10-minute overtime period to give the Warriors the overtime win over the Eagles.

“He came through when we needed him to,” Wasilla head coach Blake Livingston said by phone Friday evening. “That was definitely the biggest goal of his high school career.”

Junior Paul Sliwa scored twice to help the Warriors move into the tourney’s fourth-place match. The Warriors face Northern Lights Conference rival Grace Christian on Saturday.

Eli Tingstad earned the win in the Warrior net.

Host Juneau spoiled Colony’s hopes of reaching the 4A boys state title match for the third time in school history with a 1-0 overtime win over the Knights during the championship semifinals. Juneau will play Dimond for the title, while Colony will face defending state champion South Anchorage in the third-place match Saturday.

The girls teams from Wasilla and Colony were eliminated from the tourney during the second day of play. Soldotna used a 2-1 overtime win over the Warriors to move into the girls fourth-place match, while South Anchorage earned the chance to play SoHi with a 6-0 shutout of Colony.
