State track: Valley athletes win titles

Valley athletes win state titles

FAIRBANKS — A pair of Valley athletes earned individual titles during the first day of the ASAA/First National Bank Track and Field Championships at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks Friday.

Colony senior Audrey Michaelson captured her third straight state championship in the 4A girls’ 3,200 meters, and Palmer senior Connor Looney made the largest leap, earning his first state crown in the high jump.

Michaelson used a time of 11 minutes and 21 seconds to complete her three-peat in the in the 3,200. Friday’s win marked her fourth individual state championship overall. The Colony senior also becomes only the second runner to win three straight titles in the 4A girls 3,200. Former Juneau standout Leah Francis notched the three-peat from 2007-09.

Looney, a Palmer High basketball standout, cleared 6 feet, 1 inch to win the 4A boys high jump.

With Michaelson’s win in the 3,200, Colony holds the lead in the 4A girls’ team standings after Day 1, with 20 points overall. Thunder Mountain is second with 18.

Colony freshman Chase Stephens helped the Knights’ cause, with a runner-up finish in the 4A girls long jump. Mackenzie Thompson was fifth for the Knights in the girls 3,200.

Palmer senior Taylor Blake finished third in the girls shot put. Fischer Summers was sixth for Colony in the boys’ shot put.

Competition continues Saturday morning in Fairbanks.
