Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

CHUGIAK — It ain't over yet.
No. 1-ranked Colony's road to a second consecutive class 4A state wrestling title got a little bumpy Friday during the first day of the two-day tournament at Chugiak High School.
Advancing nine wrestlers to the semifinals and four into the finals, the Knights built a 31-point lead heading into Saturday's action. Nipping at the Knights' heels are several teams still in contention, including second-place East (122 points), third-place Chugiak (117) and fourth-place North Pole.
With a tournament-high 24 wrestlers entered in the tourney, the Knights were a big favorite to march their way to a second crown. But a couple key losses left the Knights back in the pack Friday and needing a solid Saturday to pull out the win.
Colony was forced to begin the tournament without Josh West, the Northern Lights Conference champion at 140 pounds who would have been a top seed. Things got worse for the Knights Friday morning, when No. 2 seed Zach Beauchamp was upset by unseeded Nick Cropper of Service in the first round.
Things got even worse Friday night.
After losing a difficult semifinal match to Levi Jutila of North Pole, Colony 145-pounder Levi Krueger lost his cool. The tournament's No. 2 seed, Krueger first tossed his headgear aside before the post-match handshake, then tossed his colored ankle band at Jutila. Wrestling is not a sport that looks kindly on unsportsmanlike displays, and the referee took a harsh view of Krueger's conduct.
The Colony senior was immediately ejected from the tournament, and three team points were deducted from the Knights' overall score. Krueger's scheduled match today in the consolation semifinals will go as a forfeit.
Colony head coach Fred McKinney said he was “extremely” disappointed in Krueger's actions. But despite the unfortunate series of events, McKinney said the Knights aren't feeling sorry for themselves.
“Zero excuses,” he said.
The day was far from a total loss for the Knights. Though the first day, the Knights still have 19 wrestlers alive in the tournament, including four in the championship finals. In order to pull out the title, McKinney said he'll need a solid showing today from those wrestlers in the consolation rounds, which begin at 9 a.m. Consolation finals (3rd/4th and 5th/6th place matches) are scheduled to begin at 4:30, with the championship finals set for 7 p.m.
“We're going to have to wrestle extremely tough tomorrow,” he said.
Wrestling into the finals Friday night for the Knights were Charles Coisman (103 pounds), Kyle Wilson (119), Aaron Boss (135) and Jeff Pritchett (285).
The Knights were the only Valley program to advance wrestlers into the finals. Wasilla got three wrestlers into the semifinal round, but lost all three bouts, while Palmer's Nick Stahler, the No. 1 seed at 145 pounds, was upset in the semis by Chugiak’s John O'Hara.
Here's a rundown of Friday's semifinal action:
103
The top seed, Coisman improved his season record to 30-0 by winning three matches Friday to advance to Saturday's championship match. There, he'll face East sophomore Matthew Malnoske, the No. 3 seed. Malnoske beat teammate Skyler Moore in the semis.
In the semifinals, Coisman easily handled Eric Tupper of Lathrop, scoring a first-round takedown and three second-period back points en route to a 7-1 win.
Malnoske and Coisman met earlier this season, with the Colony wrestler coming out on top.
Coisman said getting a win over the East freshman won't be easy.
“He's quick and he's a very smart wrestler,” Coisman said.
In order to win, he said he'll have to avoid making any mistakes.
“It's going to take not screwing up and good wrestling.”
112
Top seed Anthony Ricketts had no trouble advancing to the finals, easily winning all three of his matches Friday. Ricketts will face third-seeded Jeremy Simmons of Lathrop in the finals today.
119
Second-seeded Kyle Wilson of Colony was awarded a point for an illegal hold to take a very close 2-1 decision over Wasilla senior Mike Chafin, the third seed.
The match was scoreless through the opening period, with Chafin taking a 1-0 lead with a second-period escape. Wilson was then awarded a point for an illegal hold, but after protests from the Wasilla coaching staff, the point was taken away.
Chafin intentionally let Wilson up to open the third period. After each had good takedown opportunities, Chafin was called for an illegal hold again with Wilson on the attack. This time, the point stood and Wilson escaped with a 2-1 win.
Wilson leaped to his feet following the match, a second last-second win over Chafin in less than a week. Wilson also defeated the Wasilla wrestler in the finals of the Northern Lights Conference last Saturday at Colony.
The victory set up a showdown with top-seeded Nathan Hoffer, last year's champion at 103. Wilson is also a defending champion, having taken home the top spot last year at 112.
“It's going to take everything I've got,” Wilson said. “It's the last match of the season. I ain't gonna hold anything back.”
125
Dustin Maxwell, the top seed from East High, had his hands full with Homer's Ben Daigle in the semifinals, picking up a tight 5-3 win to advance. Maxwell will face South sophomore Luke Shelley, the third seed, in tonight's final. Like Maxwell, Shelley got to the finals with a 5-3 decision, ending unseeded Nick Cropper's Cinderella run through the bracket.
130
Colony sophomore Sam Loggins missed out on a state title match by getting outscored 4-0 in the final period against West Valley's Doug Templeton. Templeton, a junior, picked up an escape to go up 5-4 in the final frame, added another after Loggins' third caution call, and ended the match with a takedown to earn an 8-4 win. Templeton now gets to face Kodiak's Jimmy Eggemeyer, the top seed and a returning state champion.
135
Colony senior Aaron Boss avenged a loss in last week's NLC finals with a 3-1 victory over Wes Mills of Soldotna. Boss scored two points with a first-period throw for a takedown, then got an escape in the second period.
Mills fought back for an escape in the third, then nearly tied the match with a takedown at the end of the match, but couldn't quite finish the move before the final whistle sounded.
Following the match, Mills and Boss exchanged words briefly following the post-match handshake.
“He had said a few things before the match,” Boss said. “That was my motivation.”
The two wrestlers quickly made up, shaking hands again after they left the mat.
Boss will face top-seeded Grant Sullivan of Chugiak in the finals. Sullivan's route to the finals included an 8-4 win over Lipho Thirakul of East, the No. 4 seed.
The Colony senior also reached the finals last season at 112 pounds, losing to teammate Kyle Wilson. Sporting a special haircut with lines shaved into the side of his head, Boss said he relishes the opportunity to wrestle again under the state finals spotlight.
“I love the crowd when I amp 'em up with something unexpected,” he said.
140
Top seed Qunicy Voris took a 9-2 decision from Dimond's Zach Eastlick in the semifinals, while No. 2 seed Eric Antesberger of North Pole advanced with an 8-4 win over Pierce Stowman of West Valley.
145
Nick Stahler fell victim to an upset at the hands of Chugiak senior John O'Hara. Stahler, the top seed at 145, was in control throughout the match, but the fifth-seeded O'Hara kept things close until late. Stahler led 10-8 heading into the final period, but O'Hara got one point with an escape. With a large contingent of Chugiak fans cheering him on, O'Hara then took Stahler to the mat, getting the winning points after the referee whistled the bout over.
Colony's Krueger, meanwhile, was tied with Jutila going into the third period before giving up a crucial reversal midway through the period. Krueger was able to escape, but couldn't get the needed takedown before time expired.
152
In a big upset, sixth-seeded Carson Roberts of West knocked off top seed Kamden Johnson of Sitka in the semifinals. Roberts will look to continue his string of upsets in Saturday's finals against Steven Dyer of Juneau, the No. 2 seed who won a 17-14 decision over Homer's Tris Brymer in the semis.
160
Fifth seed Kenny Boykin hung tough against top-seeded Nolan McBryde in the semifinals, but fell victim to a late McBryde reversal and back points. Boykin reached the semis by knocking off Kodiak's Gary Anthony, who was a runner-up at last week's NLC tournament.
McBryde will face No. 3 Marlon Branson of Kodiak in the finals. Branson is the reigning NLC champion at 160.
171
Wasilla's Casey Katchinska was no match for Jessy Amos, who will take a spotless 34-0 record into today's finals. Amos led the match throughout before finally getting a pin over Katchinska, the bracket's fourth seed, with less than a minute left in the third round.
Amos will look to finish off a perfect season today against Taylor Lewis of North Pole, who also won by fall in the semis, pinning Chugiak's Zach Baldwin in 1:31.
189
A rematch of last weekend's NLC finals proved to be a replay as well. Colony's Angelo Bellotte, the fourth seed, fell to Skyview's Eddie Buffington for the second consecutive week. Buffington took Bellotte down five times in the match to set up a finals showdown with No. 2 Kent Osborn of Lathrop, who pinned Dimond's Curtis Ferris in just 40 seconds Friday night.
215
Colony ran into a second straight tough draw at 215 when sophomore Eric Fan found himself up against Andrew Wilson, the undefeated top seed. Fan, who won his first two matches of the day by major decision, had no answer for Wilson, falling in 1:28.
Wilson will go up against cross-town rival Trevor McDonald of West in the finals. McDonald, the third seed, knocked off No. 2 Sheldon Vogt in the semis.
275
Colony's Jeff Pritchett knows what he needs to do today if he's going to have a chance at a title.
“Determination,” Pritchett said minutes after advancing to his first state final.
He'll need plenty of that against SoHi's Les Baker, the top seed at 275 and a wrestler who beat Pritchett 11-1 in the NLC finals. Baker advanced to the finals with a pin of Dimond's Alex Lutton in the semis.
Nearly 50 pounds lighter than Baker, Pritchett said he'll need to adjust his strategy to have a shot against the big SoHi senior.
“I've got to stay out of the bottom position,” he said.
Pritchett set up a rematch with Baker by getting past Wasilla's Jed Johnson in a close semifinal match.
Pritchett jumped out to a 7-2 lead midway through the second period, but Johnson got a reversal to make it 7-4 going into the third. The Wasilla wrestler then pulled a reversal, let Pritchett up, then took him down again to tie the score at 8-8.
The match seemed headed for overtime, but Pritchett managed to wiggle away from Johnson with one second left in the match to seal the 9-8 win.
Following the emotional loss, Johnson lost one team point for the Warriors by slamming his fists to the mat in anger.
Pritchett said he knew he had to escape as the final seconds ticked off the clock.
“It was do our die,” he said. “It's my senior year so I had to leave it all out there.”
