October 6th, 2023-did everyone feel the shift in the world that day? With broken hearts, we announce Steven Charles Berger passed away at Mat-Su Regional Hospital this day, surrounded by his family. He was 79 years old with the energy and plans of a 29-year-old, but his heart simply couldn’t keep up.

Steven was born in Philadelphia on December 29th, 1943 to Herbert and Anita (Pleckner) Berger. His father was in the Navy, and he had fond memories of his early years growing-up in Virginia, followed by a later move to Southern California. He graduated from Westminster high school, attended Orange Coast College, then became a police officer with the Garden Grove Police Department. He eventually left the police department seeking adventure in Alaska, but continued to use his detective skills much to his children’s disappointment during their teen years!

He moved his family to Alaska permanently in 1972, where he joined (and retired from) the Anchorage Fire Department. He saved many lives and was a hero to us all. He had a passion for all things in construction, and in his “spare” time, he built houses (who does that?). He was, in his own words “solution driven”, and there was almost no problem he couldn’t solve. If the proper method or tool did not exist, he created it with a welding torch and duct tape.

Steve enjoyed dancing, and was an active member of the Anchorage Social Dance Club where he spent most Saturday evenings.

He leaves his wife and dance partner of 20+ years Kristy, his children and their spouses/partners Tracey & Duane, Steven & Dana, Stephanie & Jim, grandchildren Dylan, Ethan, Paige, Savanna, Sabrina, Shoshannah, and Seth, his sister Renee, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Please join us at noon on October 28th, 2023 at the Palmer Elks Lodge, 2600 N Barry’s Resort Dr. Wasilla, AK, to remember Steve.
