Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Wasilla resident Steven Miles Porter, 45, died in an auto accident Feb. 27, 2004.
A memorial service will be held March 16 at 11 a.m. at Valley Funeral Home Chapel, 151 E. Herning Ave. in Wasilla. Pastor Duane Hanson will officiate.
Mr. Porter was born Feb. 8, 1959, in Chicago.
He came to Alaska with his family in 1964, residing in the Matanuska Valley.
Mr. Porter finished the 10th grade in Wasilla and received his GED while serving in the U.S. Army. During his working career he worked as a laborer and handyman.
His hobbies included ivory carving, creating Native masks and he was a very imaginative writer.
Mr. Porter's family said, "Steven will be very missed and remembered for his smile and happy nature."
He is survived by his mother Carol Bragg-Sprengel; daughters Tiffany and Taunya, both of Washington; brothers Edward Porter and James Bragg Jr.; sisters Christine Vine and Tina Riley; his lifetime companion Roda Sikvayuqak; and many other family members.
Arrangements were made by Valley Funeral Home & Crematory in Wasilla.
