Stop telling women how to take care of their own bodies

To the editor:

State GOP Sen. Fred Dyson recently gave a speech in which he said women should give up lattes so they can afford birth control. That is hardly a legitimate comparison.

In order for a woman to get a prescription for birth control pills, she must first see her physician, which costs several hundred dollars.

A woman without insurance could spend tens of thousands of dollars on birth control pills in her lifetime prior to menopause, and more than $8,000 even if she has health insurance. Would our legislators rather have our tax dollars pay for the cost of supporting unwanted children? How many thousands of dollars does that cost for just one child?

Senator Dyson is a member of the same legislature that is trying to force women to report our medical conditions to the government if we need an abortion. This seems odd coming from a party that is constantly purporting they are for less government.

Maybe it’s time our legislators started working on reducing the $1 billion state budget deficit created by Governor Parnell and stop telling women how to take care of their own bodies.
