Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District Student Advisory Board Student Government Association, March 20, 2024

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District (MSBSD) Student Advisory Board / Student Government Association, informally referred to as SAB, serves as an advisory board to the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District School Board. Monthly, student representatives from each secondary school in the district come together to discuss issues and contribute to educational decisions.

On March 20, 2024, a productive SAB meeting took place at Colony High School. School representatives provided updates and insights on current issues and events. Ocelia Bell, the Student Advisory Board Representative-Elect, filling in for Ben Kolendo, the Student Advisory Board / Head Student Representative, delivering a presentation on recent actions and proceedings of the MSBSD School Board.

During the meeting, Quinlen Schacle, the Student Advisory Board President, highlighted SAB's in-school campaign, discussing the distribution of posters across district schools to raise awareness and interest in SAB. Subsequently, representatives collaborated in groups to plan an upcoming fundraiser named "Geo Airlines," scheduled for April 22, 2024, at Mat-Su Career and Technical High School. This event aims to foster community and explore diverse cultures for elementary students in the MSBSD.

Following these discussions, representatives engaged in committee work, focusing on community outreach, special issues, and fundraising. Ms. Shea, the SAB advisor, addressed upcoming executive board nominations and elections, slated for the next body meeting.

In addition, amendments to Policy 4300, “Votes for Constitutional Amendments,” and Policy 4400, “Votes for Bylaw/Policy Amendments” were deliberated. These amendments, proposed by the Executive Board, seek to redistribute power from the Executive Board to the representative body, reflecting a commitment to shared governance and inclusivity.

The next meeting is set for April 10th at Wasilla High School, from 10:30-12:30. The SAB aims to ensure all student voices are heard, working towards positive changes in schools across the district.
