For the second consecutive week, Houston sophomore Luke Wagner has been named the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman Student Athlete of the Week.
Wagner became Houston High’s first state wrestling champion since 2005 Saturday when he won the 220-pound weight class during the ASAA/First National Bank 123A State Wrestling Championships at Nikiski High School.
Wagner edged Mt. Edgecumbe’s Paul Johanson 4-2 in overtime to win his first career state title. The sophomore rallied from an early 2-0 deficit and trailed 2-1 late in the third period. Wagner was able to get a takedown early during the overtime frame to score the title.
Prior to the finals, Wagner recorded pins in the first three matches of his tournament. With the win, Wagner recorded the 17th state title in HHS wrestling history.
Last week, Wagner won the 220-pound title during the Denali/Kachemak Conference Championships in Seward last Saturday.
The Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman congratulates Wagner on his success.
