MAT-SU — When Danielle James enrolled at the Alaska Job Corps Center she hoped to become employable. But since enrolling last January, she has accomplished far more than that.

Originally from Kenai, James excels in her academic and vocational training and has held leadership positions, including in the Student Government Association. As an Alaska Job Corps office administration student, she was placed in Sen. Mark Begich’s office for work-based training beginning Oct. 15. Since James is both gregarious and friendly, it was a perfect fit.

Every day in Sen. Begich’s office is exciting, she said, because she meets new people, practices good business skills, makes connections, and helps the office staff with a variety of constituency problems.

Her daily job site mentor is legislative assistant Mary Kvalheim.

“She has been the best instructor. I have learned so much from her,” James said.

Kvalheim is a member of the Alaska Job Corps Community Relations Council.

“Dani has done a great job. She is a professional and so enthusiastic and helpful,” Kvalheim said.

One day last month, James accompanied the senator to meetings, to make contacts and assist with some backup photography.

“It was the coolest day,” James said. “Senator Mark listens to everyone, and he tries to help them with whatever problem they may have.”

Here is the schedule from her day with the senator:

• 9 to 9:40 a.m.: Tour of Lowe’s in South Anchorage, where the senator asked about products and staff.

• 10 to 11 a.m.: Z.J. Loussac Library to open up the Seward Kenai Highway Safety Council.

• 11 to 11:15 a.m.: KFAR to talk about various things of interest.

• 11:20 a.m. to noon: Alaska Municipal League and answered questions from mayors from all over Alaska.

• 1:30 to 2:45 p.m.: Senior town hall meeting at an Anchorage senior center; spoke about Social Security and answered questions.

• 3 to 4 p.m.: Alliance of Alaska meeting where Begich sat down with members and discussed economics of the state.
