Student recommends keeping same start times

To the editor:

This year the school times did not start at 7:30 a.m., they started at 7:45 a.m. for middle school and high school, and for elementary school they started at 9:15 a.m.

If they keep moving the school times forward, middle school and high school will start at 9 a.m. and finish at 3:30 p.m. and elementary school will start at 10:30 a.m. and finish at 5 p.m.

If that happens, then the elementary school students won’t have much time to do fun stuff after they get home.

The school might have to cancel extracurricular activities because they would go to 6, 7 or 8 p.m.

Then the students will have no time to do homework because they will be so tired and they won’t be able to do anything fun.

At the middle school and high school levels, some of the high school students have really hard classes with a lot of homework, such as the Advance Placement classes.

They have maybe two or three hours of homework. And some of them would have an extracurricular activity so they would get out at 4 or 5 p.m. and then only have two or three hours to do all of their stuff.

And some of the high school students might have part-time jobs that would take up a couple more hours so they might have to quit their job to be able to go to school and get all their schoolwork done and not have enough money for college.

If they continue on this, they will get out at 3:30 p.m. and then they might have to go to a job that would take up two or three hours, then they would get out of their job at 6:30 p.m., and then have to do two hours worth of homework.

So they would be done at 8:30 p.m. (Not counting if they have to drive 20 minutes to their job and away from their job, that would add 40 minutes later that they would get home.)

If they have a zero hour class, they will have to go to bed earlier to get up, maybe, though some people need less sleep than others.

I recommend that they keep this year’s school times at 7:45 a.m. and 9:15 a.m.
