Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

MAT-SU — This summer, 16 Mat-Su Borough students successfully completed one or more components in the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program.
The program offers advance training components in math, science and engineering, according to a press release. Its goal is to inspire students to complete the math and science classes required for a college career in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM.
The summer program includes:
• Middle School Academy is a two-week, on-campus learning program and promotes education in the STEM subjects.
• Computer Build invites students to assemble computers and earn the right to keep them by successfully completing trigonometry, physics and chemistry by the time the graduate high school.
• The Acceleration Academy provides high school students a unique opportunity to enroll in college-level courses at University of Alaska Anchorage that are taught by tenured and tenure track professors in the fields of biology, chemistry, geology, physics, engineering and mathematics.
• Summer Bridge is a component for recent high school graduates that combines two hours of university classes each day with an internship in science or engineering.
Mat-Su Borough students who recently completed one or more of the components are:
Acceleration Academy — Henrique Miller, Interior Distance Education of Alaska; Sylvia Angnabooguk, Mat-Su Career and Technical High School; Joseph Lopez, Wasilla High School; and, Krystiana Mark, Susitna Valley High School.
Middle School Academy — Bessie Twitchell, Teeland Middle School; Savannah Shanigan, Teeland Middle School; Hunter York, Mirror Lake Middle School; Amanda Kimpton, Teeland Middle School; Billy Okpik, Colony Middle School; Keith Perry, Wasilla Middle School; Yugissaq Ripke, Butte Elementary School; Sara Perkins, Colony Middle School; Levi Farris, Academy Charter School; and, Ben Almeida, Palmer Junior Middle School.
Computer Build — Emily Smith, Wasilla High School; Daniel Settle, Mat-Su Career & Technical High School; Sylvia Angnabooguk, Mat-Su Career and Technical High School; and, Joseph Lopez, Wasilla High School.
