Because the Valley loves their Krispy Kreme doughnuts, students at Wasilla High School will get the chance to dig into something a little more meaty -- books.
Last year, the school launched a literacy project aimed at getting kids more interested in reading and literature. During the summer, every student had a required reading list.
"My daughter had a list of books she could pick from for her honors class, and a couple of other required reading books," said Nanette Rucker of the school's Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), which hosted the Krispy Kreme fund-raiser. "It's the first time kids were supposed to be reading throughout the summer. They're trying to get kids focused on literature."
The money raised by the Krispy Kreme fund-raiser -- approximately $10,000 -- will help purchase many of the books on the required reading lists.
"These books get expensive for the students," Rucker said. "The money we raise is going to help supplement the textbooks with some additional books they need for class."
