Students take on excellence at American Charter

MAT-SU — American Charter Academy, serving grades two through 12, is a great opportunity for any student to achieve academic excellence starting at a young age. Nina Brady’s second- through eighth-grade multi-age classroom works in a quiet environment where her students work above and beyond their personal expectations.

“The philosophy that forms the framework of American Charter Academy’s 2-8 grade classroom is two-fold,” Brady said. “One, we treat each other right, and two, we are always busy during class time.”

Students in Brady’s class have outstanding achievements in math and world geography. Amelia Mikkelsen earned a chance to show her knowledge in world geography at the state level competition. Thirty students have accomplished a 90 percent or above in their Alaska Math Standards throughout the year. They have been rewarded by earning sponsor-funded donations to Doctors without Borders.

“Making a difference in the world becomes a tangible event, one where hard work has a global impact,” Brady said.

These students are helping the world one grade at a time.

The students’ mindset during their school day is both academically and globally focused. They all work as hard as they can to improve themselves and achieve Doctors without Borders certificates.

“I like how quiet the classroom is while I’m working,” Mikkelsen said.

Sierra Hicks agreed. “I like the classroom, it is very nice.”

William Schmidt said, “I like that I have my own computer and space to work.”

American Charter Academy is a standards-based school, and students are tested and placed where they are functioning academically. This allows the student to grow faster academically. The middle school is divided into two groups by levels. Each has its own homeroom and a consistent and highly qualified teaching staff. The high school offers a combination of online and classroom opportunities with highly qualified teachers in each content area. This blended learning style allows students to experience the best in the classroom with their peers as well as the freedom to excel at a faster rate. Students at all levels enjoy cross-curricular projects.

American Charter Academy is accepting applications for the 2012-13 school year.

There will be two multiple-age classrooms next year in addition to a sixth- through eighth-grade middle school and a full high school. If you are looking for a school where you can pursue academic excellence while enjoying a small, safe, family atmosphere, consider American Charter Academy.
