If you have traversed Willow, you know it home to many world-class sled dog teams and serves as the starting line for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, helping it earn the nickname as the “Dog Mushing Capitol of the World.” So it is only fitting that the community hosts its own Iditarod qualifier dog mushing race, and this year, the Su Dog 300 is making its inaugural run as a qualifying race leading up to the Iditarod.
The inaugural Su Dog 300 gets underway on February 21, 2026, marking the launch of a new mid-distance sled dog race in the heart of Alaska’s mushing country. The public is invited to a Starting Line Party at 2 p.m. on February 21, at the Willow Community Center, where 20 mushers will depart on the opening miles of this new race.
“The Su Dog 300 honors this legacy and serves as an official Iditarod qualifier and a new opportunity for mushers and the community alike,” race organizers said in a press release.
Participants will travel a 300-mile course from the lower Susitna River Valley into the rugged terrain of the Talkeetna Mountains. Designed with mentorship and learning at its core, the race emphasizes quality dog care, skill-building for mushers, and a welcoming community atmosphere. In the face of harsh and variable winter conditions, the Su Dog 300 prioritizes integrity, teamwork, and the joy of the sport.
It was set to have its first run last year, but the race was cancelled due to concern over the warm weather that has produced precipitation in the form of rain instead of snow along the trail.
Closing Ceremonies will be held on Tuesday, February 24, at 6 p.m. at the Willow Community Center and spectators are invited to join.
