The inaugural run of the Su Dog 300 sled dog race has hit a snag…or more like a few puddles, and officials announced that the race has been canceled.
“Here is the moment no one wanted to happen, but the Su Dog 300 is going to (have to) cancel,” officials wrote on social media.
Set for this weekend in Willow, the Su Dog 300 was to be an Iditarod qualifier, but more than that, a community-focused initiative to bring a dogsled race to the Su Valley. “Willow is the ideal area. It’s an amazing mushing area that people come to from around the dog mushing world,” said Tre-C Dumais, Chairperson for the Su Dog 300 in a previous interview. “It feels like this is the right time. This was how things work-the right time, the right place, and the right people to have a new race.”
The statement says that the 300 miles of trail that is solid and holding up, but there has been concern over the warm weather that has produced precipitation in the form of rain instead of snow.
“Our sincerest apologies go out to our mushers, volunteers, sponsors, and fans who were excited to come out this weekend. We will see you all in 2026!”
