FAIRBANKS — Susitna Valley sophomore Nick Nysewander-Kellard won his first state title Saturday afternoon, sprinting his way to a gold medal in the 100-meter event during the second day of the ASAA/First National Bank 1-2-3A State Track and Field Championships at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks.
Although it wasn’t his season best, Nysewander-Kellard used a time of 11.79 seconds to finish first, and edge Valdez senior Cody Hedberg.
Nysewander-Kellard posted a season-low 11.70 to win the Region II 100 title last week.
Nysewander-Kellard also finished second in the 200 to help lead the Rams to a ninth-place finish in the boys’ team standings.
The Su Valley boys’ 400 relay squad also placed Saturday, finishing third.
Freshman Bailey Stevenson placed in three different events to lead the Su Valley girls. Stevenson was fourth in both the high jump and 3,200, and sixth in the 800.
Missy Scott finished fifth in the 400 meter run for the Rams.
