Sullivan is ‘on the wrong side of history’

To the editor:

U.S. Senate candidate Dan Sullivan supports discrimination. In a survey for the Alaska Family Action group, Sullivan expressed his support for legislation that would permit people to discriminate against LGBT Americans. Under the guise of advancing religious liberty, the legislation would forbid the government from taking any action to prevent people from mistreating others based on their sexual orientation.

I am aware that some people have a deeply held religious belief opposing LGBT relations, but, if we were to follow Christ’s teachings in Matthew 7:12: “whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them,” they would not allow for the poor treatment of these individuals. Further, as history confirms, many believed it was morally justified to block rights to African Americans and women. It is very clear — even crystal clear — that one’s interpretation of religious freedom should not be used as a legitimate justification for government intolerance and oppression.

Acts 10:28: “God has shown me that I should not call any person common or unclean.”

Mr. Sullivan is putting himself on the wrong side of history and religion, and the wrong side of this Alaska voter.
