MAT-SU — A sure sign of summer has popped up in the Mat-Su Valley, and it has nothing to do with green buds on trees or flowers starting to bloom – its motorhomes and tour buses starting to roll through the Valley as the tourism season starts.

This summer, don’t let the people on those motorcoaches have all the fun – get out and become a tourist yourself. Exploring your own backyard can be a fun – and inexpensive – way to enjoy the summer.

“The term ‘staycation’ has been talked about a lot recently,” said Mat-Su CVB Executive Director Bonnie Quill. “Alaskans can stay here at home this summer, yet still enjoy a great vacation.”

This summer, grab the family and head out to Matanuska Glacier at Mile 102 of the Glenn Highway. But don’t rush – the Glenn Highway is designated as a National Scenic Byway, and has plenty of breathtaking views and roadside pullouts. The access to the glacier is at Glacier Park, and after passing through and getting to the glacier, you’ll have the opportunity to walk on ice that is hundreds of years old.

You can explore the glacier on your own, but for the ultimate experience, consider one of the outfitters that provide guided treks on the glacier – they know the best places to go, have all the needed equipment and best of all, they are relatively inexpensive.

Matanuska Glacier isn’t the only glacier you can visit, however. Knik Glacier is accessible by ATV or jet boat tours that operate in the Mat-Su Valley, and several flightseeing operators in the Talkeetna area offer glacier landings.

Hatcher Pass is another low-cost option for families. You can spend an entire afternoon exploring the area, from the amazing hiking opportunities to Independence Mine.

“You don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy what the Mat-Su Valley has to offer,” Quill said.

Local rivers and streams offer sightseeing opportunities, in addition to fantastic fishing. Many local guides offer easy float trips with wildlife viewing opportunities, and for those with an adventurous streak, guides offer whitewater trips along Matanuska River.

It’s easy to spend an entire summer roaming around the Mat-Su Valley, taking in amazing views, enjoying the great outdoors and making lasting memories.
