Support pumpers who obey the law

To the editor:

We at Alpine Septic Pumping Inc. and Plug Busters/A-1 Cesspool are shocked by the alleged actions of Kenny Champ as far as dumping septage in the stream near his home in Houston.

Many of our customers do not realize that there is no treatment plant here in the Valley and that we have to haul our waste into Anchorage on a daily basis. Often during the busy season, we are traveling three or four times there. Of course, this takes a lot of manpower and fuel, let alone the dump fees that Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility charges for this privilege.

Those of us who "p(l)ay by the rules" incur tremendous costs as a result. In fact, we here were trying to figure out how Mr. Champ bid the contracts he did so low. Well, now we know why.

We are two haulers who currently serve on the Mat-Su Borough Wastewater and Septage Advisory Board, which is working toward the development of a treatment system here in the Valley. Though it is years away, this Valley does need one simply due to the sheer numbers of nonpublic (septic) systems that the majority of homeowners and businesses use for their wastewater needs. Please realize that many pumpers work hard at running honest businesses, so please support those of us who do.
