During our recent celebration of Labor Day I noticed an advertisement lauding many historic accomplishments of organized labor for the working men and women of America: the 40/8-hour schedule, overtime and vacation pay, pensions, insurance, job safety and others.
These issues were all resolved with strong Democratic support while adamantly opposed by Republicans and their big corporate donors.
Yet I have noticed a subtle shift to the political right by the unions, probably due in part to our congressional delegation’s support of earmarks and legislation that brought jobs to Alaska. This shows a clear lack of knowledge of the history of the labor movement and gives little appreciation to Democrats’ consistent past and present support.
As a retired laborer, I encourage blue-collar folks to return to our progressive roots — our history is also our future. I am supporting Harry Crawford, a fellow tradesman, for the office of U.S. Representative.
He has always supported the interests of the working middle class. Let’s replace Don Young’s arrogance, ignorance and questionable associations (e.g., Bill Allen and VECO, Coconut Road, etc.) with Harry’s understanding, intelligence and honesty.
He will represent all Alaskans, even those who may not vote for him. Harry Crawford will be the voice of reason.
