To the editor:
With our local election just a few weeks away I would like to take this time to discuss why I support Wasilla City Councilman Brandon Wall in his bid for re-election.
I have had the pleasure of working with councilman Wall for the last few years and appreciate what he brings to the table. Councilman Wall is a hard-working family man, providing for his family while serving our community as a common-sense conservative councilman. He is not a career politician. He has come to the council with a clean slate, a fresh perspective and is not beholden to any special interest groups. He believes in an open and transparent government and honors his oath of office as a public official. His wife and children are his focus when working on city issues, the city budget or change in city codes to improve our city government.
As a family man, he understands the burden of increased taxes on families, over-reaching regulations and the high cost of groceries and gas in a challenged economy. In the past year, we worked together to lower our budget shortfall of more than $500,000 by making significant cuts to the city budget. Councilman Wall was very instrumental in this. He believes as I do in a small, efficient government that is accountable to our residents and understands this is the public’s money we deal with, not just an open checkbook.
He also believes we should not be in competition with the private sector and moved legislation to sell the Meta Rose Square building so the private sector can own and operate it, not the city. Wall believes city government should not be competing with our own local businesses.
Councilman Wall is very engaged in the community. For example, he supports our Wasilla Area Seniors by actively fundraising for the Meals On Wheels program so that seniors who are homebound may receive meals. Wall is also active in his children’s school sports and shooting competitions at Grouse Ridge. He and his family love to hunt, fish, hike and enjoy all that Alaska has to offer a young family. He recently took his daughter Olivia out for her first moose hunt and she was successful in bringing home a moose this year.
I think with all that has played out in the media and in the courts, both across the nation around our state — and unfortunately even here in Wasilla — it is time we raise the bar and demand higher standards in our elected officials. We need to use common sense at the ballot box and retain good public servants who work for the common good and understand and respect what is expected of a public official.
Councilman Wall has the trust and respect from his community, friends and fellow colleagues. Please join me in supporting this common sense, hardworking and dedicated public servant. Vote to re-elect Brandon Wall to Wasilla City Council. I know he’s earned my vote!
