To the editor:
For the second time this year, the Mat-Su Borough Assembly members declined to support a state study of the impacts of area coal mining. This, after an audience participation session in which 24 spoke for, and four were opposed to the study.
Once again, the assembly members failed to agree with the majority, who using substantiated research, talked about the importance of Assembly Member Warren Keogh’s resolution. Instead, they agreed with those who supported Chris Gate’s assertion that this would be a fear tactic that would slow down such projects.
Our current borough assembly touts itself as being one that’s pro-development. But, quite obviously, it’s not one that’s for responsible development. If it was, it would listen to informed citizenry, and make its decisions accordingly. Instead, the members continue to think exclusively in terms of financial gain.
Quite obviously, the phrases “pro development” and “responsible development” are not (at least in our end of the world) synonymous.
I encourage you to follow my lead and vote for Mark Masteller and Michelle Church, who will restore balance to this now lopsided equation.
