With Mat-Su Borough elections close at hand, I’ve been watching our elected officials and candidates with a more critical eye, and it’s not a pretty sight: Assembly members who seem to like having a celltower or open pit coal/gravel mine next door to your home, arrogant office holders treating opposing viewpoints with rude disdain at public meetings, weaker subdivision rules which will saddle home owners with expensive road improvement costs in the future, school board members who appear to be pushing vouchers, home schooling and charter schools to the detriment of our excellent neighborhood schools.
I would hope that voters will show up at the polls on Oct. 2, and vote for candidates who will be open, honest, and represent the best interests of the children and adults who live here rather than sacrificing those interests on the altar of “open for business” at any cost and pushing their own personal political agenda or that of some local extremist group.
We need open-minded, intelligent officials who can work civilly with all points of view and make realistic long range plans for the borough’s future that take into account not only jobs and growth, but family needs, quality of life and sustainable environment. I believe Mark Masteller, Michelle Church, Sarah Welton and Debby Retherford are candidates who will help move us toward a better future.
