To the editor:
As a community member who follows local issues, I wanted to share my thoughts on the election for Mat-Su Borough mayor. Past articles by the Frontiersman are accurate: Mark Masteller and Larry DeVilbiss are very different.
I am very impressed with Masteller’s vision for our borough and his genuine concern for the people in our community. He frequently refers to the borough’s Economic Development Plan and obviously values the time and effort that so many community members put into creating the document.
Masteller has spoken out about the cell tower controversy, offering more practical placement solutions and stressing the need for public participation in decisions that affect the whole community. I was particularly interested in his idea to put the borough checkbook online. I, for one, would very much like to see exactly where my tax dollars go.
I’ve always made an effort to stay informed about our local government and have been extremely upset at the way borough business has been conducted over the past year. I feel like my voice was drowned out by special interests.
An example of this is the repeal of Title 27 that has resulted in fewer protections to the individual landowner, increasing threats to water quality and public safety, with the potential of passing along many costly burdens to taxpayers from shoddy subdivision development. There has been a significant lack of transparency and public participation surrounding decisions that affect all of us.
Vote Masteller for Mat-Su Borough mayor.
