Supports Menard

To the editor:

I have known Wasilla City Council Member Steve Menard for his entire life. He is a fine young man. I would be proud to have him as one of my sons.

Steve was born and raised in the Mat-Su Valley. There has been a lot of joy in his life, but there has been tragedy, too. Steve had terrific parents. His mom, Linda, serves in the state Legislature. His dad, Curt, a dentist, also served in the Legislature and in other positions of responsibility in the Wasilla community.

Unfortunately, in recent years Steve has suffered the loss of many family members. Steve's brother, Curt Jr., died in a plane accident leaving a lovely wife and four wonderful kids. Uncle Steve took on the responsibility of helping Curt's widow and her grieving family. His oldest brother, Bob, went off to school in Milwaukee and opted to stay there. Steve's younger brother, Dirk, and his sister, McKenzie, also chose to pursue careers far removed from the family homestead. Thus, Steve no longer enjoys having the majority of his family around the old home place.

Several years ago, Steve's dad became quite ill. Steve attended to his dad throughout his father's long illness and was with Dr. Curt Menard Sr. when he died. Now only his mom, Linda, and Steve himself remain in the Wasilla community.

Steve serves his community well as a city council member, but he made one mistake. He has admitted that mistake and has taken full responsibility for it. Who has not made a mistake now and then?

I would urge the residents of the Wasilla community to forgive Steve's one error in judgment and retain Steve Menard on the council. Please keep in mind the difficult times Steve has gone through in the last few years and give him the break he deserves. Over many years he and his family have done a lot of good for Wasilla, and Steve has the capacity and willingness to do a lot more good.

I urge all to support the retention of this fine young man on the Wasilla City Council. I am proud to know him and give him my highest recommendation.
