To the editor:
Local elections, like that on Oct. 1, have historically had low turnouts. That seems counterintuitive as this election will have a direct effect on such areas of vital interest to local residents as property tax rates, education and our quality of life. Therefore, when the opportunity presented itself, I met with several of our local candidates. There were two who impressed me as being really outstanding.
Assembly candidate Jim Sykes has a genuine love for the Valley and has a very real concern for the well-being of those of us who live here.
His intelligence gives him an exceptional ability to deal with the complex issues we face. I also believe that when any of his constituents have a problem or issue, he would be willing to listen. Mr. Sykes has earned my respect and support.
I was equally impressed with school board candidate David Cheezem. Parents, do you remember when your children started school? Think about the excitement and enthusiasm they had. Mr. Cheezem would like to see that enthusiasm last all the way through the educational system. He has a positive attitude, believes in public education and has a very thorough understanding of how our system works. Mr. Cheezem has also earned my respect and support.
I would like to take this opportunity to urge all Valley residents to take the time to get to know the candidates, where they stand on issues that are important to you and vote.
