To the editor:
It is with great pleasure that I offer my support on behalf of Mat-Su Borough School District School Board candidate Sarah Welton.
She is an intelligent, confident, competent, determined, disciplined and forward-thinking individual. She is hardworking, energetic, open-minded, culturally responsive and committed to the principles of quality effective public education and is highly devoted to the students, families and educators within our communities.
As one of my faculty colleagues at Mat-Su College, Sarah is a reflective practitioner who thinks deeply about students, learning and curriculum. She is an active researcher who collects and uses data from her students to improve the teaching/learning process. She studies various methods of instruction and learning theories that promote self-improvement and raises challenging questions about effective teaching practices.
She’s well informed on pedagogy and public education overall and she is a professional and collaborative community member who works collectively and cooperatively with others from all walks of life to reform education. She thinks diligently about her personal stance and conviction on education issues and models enthusiasm for lifelong learning. Sarah places public education at the top of the life survival skills list. She is indeed my candidate of choice.

Special Olympics Alaska Mat-Su Community Program would like to thank our generous community for your support during our successful 2012 golf season.
Special thanks to George Collum and crew at Palmer Golf Course. Using the Palmer facilities for scheduled practices and games boosted our teams’ skills. We appreciate Palmer’s continued support throughout the years.
We send out a big thanks to Eric Henderson at Sleepy Hollow for hosting a practice and our local tournament on his beautifully groomed par-3 course.
Thanks to Skip Pelletier at Fishhook and Amos Stephens at Settler’s Bay for use of their fine courses. A special shout out to Settler Bay’s pro Travis Jorgenson and his two sweet daughters for their expertise and help on the driving range.
Our season would be nothing without the help of our unified partners, volunteers and family members. We thank you! Special thanks to volunteer and golfer extraordinaire Paul Zitko.
Congratulations to athlete Garrett Stortz and partner Hans Deemer for taking first in state with a score of 80. Athlete Jeremy Sanders and partner Jack Whaley captured second in state. The teams of Glacier and Mike Morrow, and Aaron Kulhanek and John Teubner both took third in their divisions. We also boasted the state tourney’s only all-female team of Pearl and Jenny Weaver who, lacking any competition, brought home the gold.
We hope to see you again next year and invite the community to joins us as coaches, volunteers and unified partners.
