Sutton church shouldn’t be sold

To the editor:

Something is happening in my community that I don’t understand and I am not finding any answers.

There is a small church in Sutton, the only church on the highway between Palmer and Chickaloon. It sits on land I believe was donated for a community church by Willie Mrak in the early 1980s. I don’t attend the church, but I have watched my friends and neighbors work on building a church on that property for 30 years. I know George “Ma” Johnson left at least $10,000 to help build the church. Members of the church have put in immeasurable hours building and maintaining the property. Through the years, people from the community put in the septic system, helped wire the building and provided equipment and labor to help with the church.

I know several people who regularly go to church there. I know they have a food bank that really helps people in need, especially those without transportation. They provide homework help for local students. They have a meat grinder available for community hunters and are planning a community garden at the church this summer.

Now I understand Palmer Baptist Church is selling this church. How can a church from Palmer sell a church that was financed and built by this community and holds no debt? I hope someone has some answers that I can understand.
