WASILLA — If there’s snow on the mountain tops, it must be time to start thinking about skiing.
The first opportunity of the year to begin planning for the winter season will come Friday, when the Mat-Su Ski Club will host a winter ski swap at Colony High School. The event, which begins at 10 a.m. at the school and runs through 5 p.m., will be both a fund-raiser for the Colony High cross country ski team, as well as a way to raise awareness of the year-old club.
Club president Yvonne Sumner said Monday that the club will be giving away free coffee mugs to the first 50 people who sign up to join the club.
“We’re hoping to drum up some people out here in the Valley,” Sumner said.
A one-year membership in the club is $20 per person or $40 per family. Sumner said the group formed in order to organize Valley skiers with the purpose of holding winter events and getting information out about local ski trails.
“The more members we get, the more events we can have,” Sumner said.
In addition to free coffee mugs, the ski club will be giving out free maps of groomed ski trails in the area.
“We have a lot more trails than people realize,” Sumner said.
The swap is open to the public and admission is free.
Anyone interested in selling ski gear — as well as snowboarding or snow shoeing equipment — can either reserve a table at the swap or have members of the Colony ski team sell the gear on consignment. Tables cost $10 to rent, and space is limited. 20 percent of the funds raised from consignment sales will go to the ski team. Tables can be rented the day of the event (Sumner said sellers should show up early to get a table) or by e-mailing Colony ski coach Susan Skvorc at susan.skvorc@matsuk12.us.
“The ski team can sell people’s stuff or they can rent their own table,” she said.
Sumner said she’s hoping the swap will be a good way to get information out about the club.
“I’m hoping to get enough members to really get this off the ground,” she said.
Anyone interested in joining the club can visit the ski swap or check out the club online at www.matsuski.com.
