Swimming records fall as Colony boys, girls finish 2nd at Lathrop

FAIRBANKS — The new Colony swimming and diving record board that’s now fixed to a wall inside the Palmer Pool must have inspired some extra motivation for the 2014 edition of the Colony Knights.

Since the board has been hanging, records have been falling.

Three different Colony swimmers broke longstanding school records during the Lathrop Invitational in Fairbanks over the weekend. Seniors Zach Bloom and Sierra Kinworthy, and freshman Jake Simmons will each have their names added to the new record board, which was created by volunteers during the offseason. Bloom’s name will be seen repeated throughout the boys’ list. The senior set three new Colony swim records at Lathrop, and has broken five school marks in the last eight days. Bloom used times of 1 minute, 48 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle and 57.48 in the 100 backstroke to set school records.

Kinworthy, part of four wins at the Lathrop Invite, bested a 21-year old school record in the 500 freestyle. Her time of 5:14.84 is three seconds faster than the old record.

Simmons, in his first year of prep swimming, set a new record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.57. The prior mark had held for 14 years.

Colony finished as the runner-up in both the boys and girls standings.

Kinworthy used her four wins to help Colony finish with 155 points in the team standings, 55 better than third-place North Pole. The senior finished first in both the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, and teamed with Camile Dayton, Anne Sullivan and Rachel Crosley to help Colony win both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

Crosley also won the 100 freestyle, and Katelyn Foster was first in the diving event.

Colony finished second in the boys’ class with 204 total points, 20 shy of first-place West Valley. Bloom and Joseph Anderson each won a pair of events. Bloom was first in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Anderson won the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke.

Bloom, Anderson, Simmons and Elliot Amato combined to win the 400 freestyle relay for the Knights. That same group was also second in the 200 freestyle relay.

Colony, Palmer and Wasilla are all scheduled to compete in the Homer Invitational, which starts Friday in Homer.
