Talkeetna Brownie Troop 293 is following a tradition of past Talkeetna Girl Scout Troops and Girl Scouting by doing service projects in the Talkeetna community.

Recently, the Brownies worked on a baby quilt that was given to the Talkeetna Volunteer Fire Department. The girls agreed that it would be nice to have a comforting baby quilt in the event a family was burned out of their home and a child was involved.

Each girl sewed four quilt squares together and Linda Jansen, with the help of Stacie Argetsinger, pieced the squares together, assembled the quilt and did the final finishing work.

The Brownies have been involved in other service projects, including making Get Well/Thinking of You paper dolls for the children of the victims of the Sept. 11 tragedy.

The Brownies also put aside half of their cookie money proceeds to adopt a Salvation Army family at Christmas.

The service projects allow the Brownies to work on their try-its (Brownie Badges) at the same time they are learning to serve their community.

The Brownies earned a sewing try-it, a cookie try-it and are working on a Her Story try-it with these projects. Troop 293 received these and other awards at their final Court of Awards ceremony.

At the Court of Awards ceremony, both the Brownie and Daisy Girl Scouts celebrated their hard work and achievements, and some girls bridged to the next level of Girl Scouting.
