The Houston Girls’ Basketball team is busy polishing the silver, pressing the napkins, and brewing the tea as they prepare for an afternoon of restraint rather than a full court press.

“This is really going to be a great experience for a great cause,” says Lisa Humphreys, who is overseeing the fundraiser.

Billed as a garden tea fundraiser hosted by Houston High School girls basketball team, Humprheys explains that it will be a traditional afternoon tea served with three courses of food. It is the first fundraiser of the year for the girls’ team, who lost their last game of last season to Redington 38-35 in a heartbreaker for the seniors.

But Coach Colby Wolfer isn’t focusing on the past, but rather the work ahead for his team.

“We are hoping to make serious strides this year,” he said about his team, which will be loaded with seniors that might be looking to make up for last year.

“The girls are probably looking for a little payback as they (the seniors) go into their final year of play,” Wolfer said.

Getting ready for the upcoming basketball season means fundraising in the offseason.

“The funds we raise will go to travel, food, t-shirts, refs, to whatever we can offset,” explained Wolfer.

Humphreys said this is the biggest fundraiser for the team, and one that started out as something for the girls’ hockey team several years ago, but has happily gone to the basketball team now.

Humphreys explains that the girls are responsible for every aspect of the event, from the behind-the-scenes preparations that include ironing the tablecloths and napkins, to washing the dishes, to performing hostess duties. Meanwhile, Wolfer and Coaches Riley Davis and Jace Taylor will also be helping out with meal preparation.

In addition to raising money, there is an opportunity for teambuilding and supporting the community.

“The tea gets the girls into teambuilding with the team, the coaches, and the families that support them. It lets the girls see how they can reach out to the community and give something,” said Humphreys.

“We want the community to get behind this team, asking for community support” concurs Wolfer, “it’s also a great opportunity for the team to invest a little sweat equity and see the tremendous growth opportunities from this.”

Aside from the tea, there will be a silent auction, raffle, and door prizes. There is also going to be a photo booth/selfie station complete with fancy hats and other attire, generously provided by My House Steampunk Boutique.
