Teach to whole child

To the editor:

Gone!

Music, physical education, library media specialist, band, choir, grade-level musical performances — gone!

Really? Our district says “yes,” goodbye to all of them at the elementary level.

I am a parent of two children in the elementary schools. I want my children to have music, P.E and a library. I am a music teacher in the school district and believe in teaching to the whole child, not just the part of the child who is taking the ever-increasing number of standardized tests.

Gone? Not if the district, the taxpayer says, “no.”

What can we do? E-mail, phone, or visit a school board member. Ask them the tough questions. Don’t stop until you get a clear answer.

Please, before it’s too late and we follow the path of the schools in the Lower 48, taking out a very important part of our children’s education.

As Alaskans, let’s agree to continue to teach the whole child.
