Teachers, school district reach tentative agreement

PALMER — The union representing Mat-Su teachers announced Friday that it has reached a tentative agreement with the school district on a labor contract.

Jill Showman, Mat-Su Education Association president, announced the agreement shortly before noon. The announcement contained no details about the compromise and said the association would bring the agreement to members for ratification.

Last week, Mat-Su Borough School District Superintendent Ken Burnley, who is new to the district this year, gave a statement that sounded a note of change from the previous administration, which had not budged in its position on the teachers’ contract.

His remarks on the contract came at a meeting during which teachers showed up in force and used the word “strike” much more often than at any meeting leading up to it.
