Team Alaska wins futsal gold medals

A pair of Team Alaska girls futsal teams scored gold medals during the Arctic Winter Games.

Brooklyn Shankar scored all three goals to lead the U16 squad to a 3-1 win over Team Northwest Territories Friday afternoon at Palmer High School.

The team includes Makenna Hanson, of Wasilla. Alaska beat Yukon 6-2 in the semifinals. Alivia Bailey and Jesenia Cortes scored two goals each. Hanson and Shankar also scored. Alaska was 4-1 in pool play.

Team Yukon during the Arctic Winter Games U18 girls futsal gold medal game Saturday morning at Palmer High School.

Kinsey Dufour, of Anchorage, also scored.

Alaska blanked Northwest Territories 10-0 in the semifinals. Lee led Alaska with five goals. Dufour scored twice. Sky Tapio, Mia Glorioso and Zophia Lucero also scored.

Alaska was 3-0 in pool play, outscoring opponents 19-6.

Team Alaska’s U18 futsal team earned the bronze medal with a 1-0 win over Northwest Territories. Fisher Lajoie scored the lone goal.

The Team Alaska U16 boys team finished fourth after falling 5-4 to Alberta North in the bronze medal game. Endo Ramos and Kai Walker scored two goals each.
