The Willie O’Ree Cup is named after O’Ree, the first African American to play in the National Hockey League. The Wild edged a team from Pittsburgh, Pa., to finish first in the event that included teams from 11 different cities. The Wild also became the first team from outside the Detroit area to win the 5-year-old tournament. Wasilla started the tournament with a 7-1 win over a squad from Minneapolis, Minn., skated to a scoreless tie against Pittsburgh, and used a 9-1 win over a team from Detroit to reach the finals. The Wasilla Wild includes players: Nick Abernathy, Tim Baletsky, Sam Boyles, Connor Culip, Patrick Frazier, Chelsea Friesen, goalie Emily Hollahan, Jade Johnson, Chance Morrison, Denis Natekin, Ivan Natekin, Austin Rauchenstein, Jorie Reed-Lovett, Jaden Sears, Willie Stryken, Zach Tilton, Nate Vest, Andrew Weltz and Zach Woolbert.

MAT-SU — Armed with four individual champions, Teeland Middle School captured the team title at the Tanana Invitational middle school wrestling championships in Fairbanks late last month.

Teeland finished with 260 total points and was one of five Mat-Su programs to finish in the top-six of the event which included more than 25 schools.

Matt Vandermartin was the first of four Teeland grapplers to win titles, capturing his championship in the 80-pound division. Bryce Serna (110), J.D. Cook (160) and Quace Wright (174) also finished first in their respective divisions.

Colony Middle School finished second in the event with 218 points. Porter Martin led CMS with a win in the 127-pound title match.

A pair of individual winners led Wasilla to a third-place finish in the team standings. Shannon Carpenter (85 pounds) and Jed Diederich (95) both won their weight classes.

Palmer Junior Middle School finished fifth overall with 175 points and Houston Middle School — led by Dalton Hurn’s title at 260 — finished sixth with 171 points.

In mid-February, Colony Middle School beat second-place Teeland and third-place Wasilla to win the Valley Championships wrestling meet. Diederich and teammate Christian Lowe were named the co-most outstanding wrestler of the meet.
