WASILLA — A team of science-minded students from Teeland Middle School in Wasilla will compete against 60 other middle school teams from across the country at the 2012 Science Olympiad Tournament on the University of Central Florida campus this month.
Science Olympiad is a national nonprofit organization designed to promote scientific literacy among all students, a goal shared by education, business, industry and government.
Teeland students recently won the Alaska Science Olympiad Tournament for the 10th consecutive year. As state champions, the team qualified to compete at the national level.
At the national tournament, the team will compete in 25 scientific events based on multiple science subjects, including physics, chemistry, geology, biology and a host of other science fields based on the National Science Education Standards.
Historically, students from Teeland have done very well at the national tournament and regularly place in the top 20.
Students attending national competition will hold a rummage sale and car wash at Teeland Middle School from 9 to 3 p.m., May 5 to raise funds for the trip to the competition. For more information on the Science Olympiad, visit soinc.org.
