Teeland wins state title

FAIRBANKS -- Teeland Middle School placed a trio of wrestlers in the final round and 14 in the top eight places en route to scoring 224 total points and capturing the Tanana Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Fairbanks last week.

Teeland finished seven points ahead of second-place Tanana in the 10-team field to win the middle school state wrestling team title.

Andrew Vanasdoll and Mike Chafin each won their weight classes for Teeland. Vanasdall won the 95-pound class with a victory over Robby Brymer of Chapman Middle School. Mike Chaffin defeated North Pole's Dillon Neth to win the 115-pound title.

Vanasdoll and Chaffin each finished the 2004 season undefeated.

Aaron Boss finished second for Teeland in the 85-pound class.

Teeland coach Bill Booth called the win a total team effort, citing that his wrestlers won 10 of the last 13 matches they wrestled in the tourney.

Palmer finished just eight points shy of second-place Tanana to claim third place.

The Moose sport three individual champions. Ryan Conroy (75), Chris Cox (85) and Shannon Sawyer (160) each won their weight class.

Houston Middle School's Eric Shell also won a title. Shell defeated Colony's Vince Filkins to win the 133-pound class.
