Teens injured in accidents remain hospitalized

A 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman remain at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage after each was injured in separate accidents.

Andrew Sandvik was medivaced to Providence Hospital by life flight July 17. According to information from Providence Hospital staff, Sandvik is reportedly now out of intensive care and is listed in fair condition. Christina Simmons of Big Lake, injured in a July 22 accident, has not regained consciousness, according to hospital spokesperson Corene Jennings.

Alaska State Troopers and emergency crews were called at about 4:30 a.m., to Palmer Fishhook Road to respond to the accident that injured Sandvik. A1995 dodge neon Sedan driven by Holis Honeycutt had reportedly gone out of control due to high speeds and veered across the road in an impact that broke trees before finally landing inside the treeline.

Sandvik was a passenger in the back seat. The other two people in the vehicle were treated and released at Valley Hospital.

Christina Simmons was medivaced to Providence Hospital July 22 after a three-vehicle accident at Mile 46 Parks Hwy.

According to information received at the scene by troopers, Simmons was southbound on the Parks in a 1998 Dodge Neon when she crossed the centerline into the northbound lane.

The Neon sideswiped the rear tire of a northbound cement truck that had pulled over in its lane to avoid the car. The Neon then struck a 2001 full-size Dodge pickup head-on.

Simmons was taken by helicopter to Providence where she was listed in critical condition and treated for leg and head injuries.

Simmons has worked two years at the Mile 49 CafŽ, where she is well-loved by patrons and friends. She had recently graduated from Houston High School.

Troopers said it was unclear what caused Simmons' vehicle to swerve into the oncoming lane. Traffic was diverted around the accident until 7 p.m., when the scene was cleared.
