Thank you notes are a good investment

To the editor:

I recently received a hand-written postcard from a young woman I’ve known for 20 years. She and my daughter went from fourth grade to graduation together and were as thick as thieves all through that time.

Her postcard was inviting me to a home-based sales party for kitchenware products, where as hostess she would be taking orders for sales. Normally, I would attend and because I like this product line, and I typically purchase something.

This time however, I will not attend. Why? (I’m glad you asked.) My husband and I attended her wedding a year ago. Not only did we attend, my daughter spent a lot of money to fly back to Alaska specifically for the wedding. Together the three of us spent a nice sum of money on several of the gift items listed in her bridal gift registry.

A year has gone by — and neither we, nor my daughter, have received a thank you note, a thank you email or even a thank you phone call. This young lady took the time and effort to write out and mail a postcard asking me to come to her home and spend more money, but couldn’t take the time to write a simple thank you note for the wedding gifts.
