This is a great time to say thanks to a frequently maligned group of our community citizens, our U.S. Post Office personnel and mail carriers! With just a little bit of reflection, regardless of how long the lines and resultant generated disgruntled emotions, we can see the postal service’s dedicated personnel deserve a big pat on the back at this time of year! Most of us probably don’t even come close in fathoming the behind the scenes workload associated with moving, processing and delivery of who knows how many millions of mail and packages this season, just here in the Valley, from around the nation and world. And then they also face the many probably not-so-smiling faces of thousands of people daily at the counters.
No, we don’t have a perfect postal system, and mistakes are made, mail lost and packages damaged. But name me one perfect organization, particularly associated with the holiday peak demands? When one considers the volume of mail processed and delivered daily to almost every business and citizen in our country for the very reasonable (I should say ‘cheap’) costs charged, the value of the service far exceeds our costs. Our fellow postage citizens have endured a great trying period again this year, and did a great job of delivering to me the good wishes and cheer and gifts from many family and friends. I for one wish to express thanks and appreciation for the exceptional work they did and do throughout the year. And no, I am not a postal employee, just a basic citizen who gets his mail almost always as anticipated.
