Thanks for helping make Palmer a great place to teach and live

To the editor:

Swanson Elementary second-grade teachers would like to thank some of the many community members who have greatly enriched our students’ learning this year.

Through Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game Salmonids in the Classroom program, Mr. Adrian Baer discussed the Pacific salmon lifecycle and provided us with silver salmon eggs for our fish tank. We were able to go ice fishing at Finger Lake, a real highlight for students (especially the lucky ones who caught a fish). We also had a fascinating fish dissection lesson with salmon from Fish and Game.

Palmer Mayor DeLena Johnson came to speak about her responsibilities as mayor, what it’s like to work at Palmer City Hall and how she helps Palmer’s residents. Our students loved meeting the mayor for three years in a row!

Alaska’s Kids Don’t Float enthusiastic representative Jarrid Huckfeldt visited Swanson twice this year. He spoke about preventing hypothermia and frostbite in conjunction with our Arctic Survival Unit. During our second-grade health fair, he spoke about water safety, specifically about wearing personal floatation devices.

Other special guests at our health fair included Dr. Teresa Beck from North Star Animal Hospital. She presented information to our classes about staying safe around dogs to prevent bites, important information since most children live with one or more dogs or visit others who have dogs.

Palmer Police Department Officer Gipson taught students about when and how to use 911 and also brought his patrol bike to talk about bike safety and helmets. Children always love seeing a police officer in full uniform.

Mat-Su Borough School District Nutrition Services sent representatives Chris and Diane to teach about well-balanced eating and enjoying healthy eating choices, including school lunches.

Peak Fitness’ Ann Riggs was generous with her time, talking about healthy ways to stay active and fit. Last, but not least, Dr. Jody Sessom’s office was wonderfully represented by Carolyn Sessom and Lilly Sessom, who taught our students about proper dental care and healthy food choices.

Many thanks to all who help make Palmer a great place to teach and live!

Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Derouen, Mrs. Evans, Ms. Kenney, Ms. Lewis and Mrs. West
