To the editor:
I am writing this letter as a Palmer High teacher, class of 2014 advisor and very thankful member of the community of Palmer.
Last fall, the students in the class of 2014 decided to tackle a project that hadn’t been attempted in more than 10 years. They decided to have prom in the Palmer High gymnasium.
The students also decided to keep costs down by using recycled and reused materials obtained from the community. Students and parents worked for more than seven months collecting supplies and making decorations. During the final push the three days before prom, I was delighted to see dozens of parents and students contributing to “Atlantis: The Lost City.”
Decorations included a 30-foot whale, sunken ship, octopus and coral reef. The creative genius behind this project was Yvonne Marty, a Palmer High School parent and longtime community member and volunteer.
Thank you, Yvonne, for donating hundreds of hours orchestrating an amazing event for Palmer High students.
Listed below are other businesses and community groups that helped make this year’s prom a success. Thank you!
• Special Events Alaska — decoration fabric/balloons.
• J.D. Steel — steel rod for welding props.
• Greatland Welding — green plastic.
• Frontiersman — tubes and paper.
