To the editor:
On Wednesday, Sept 10th, we lost a very special person. Anthony “Tony” Carter, lost his battle with cancer. He fought that fight with pride, dignity, and heart (the way he fought every battle). Tony was a resident of Palmer, A devoted Husband, father, friend and member of the LDS church. He was a US Marine for eight years, a Green Beret for 12 years and an Airport Police and Fire Officer and Army reservist. His last deployment was in 2012 when he took time away from his family, friends and work to fight for his country.
Last Wednesday, I attended Tony’s funeral services. The Honor Guard from the Marines and Airport Police & Fire escorted the flag draped coffin of our friend and brother to the LDS church. Tony’s procession consisted of several Police cars, a fire truck and some personal vehicles. The entire day was emotional for all of us, but nothing could have prepared me for what I would witness driving through town. I just recently moved to Palmer and am not used to small town hospitality. I was overcome with emotion and pride as we drove in Tony’s procession and every person we came across, whether in a car or on foot, came to a respectful stop and let us pass by. You had no idea that a true hero was being honored, yet you honored him as he so deserved. The respect you all showed was not unnoticed. It was appreciated more than you will ever know and it has touched us all deeply.
With a heartfelt “Thank you Palmer!”
