To the editor:
I want to thank the volunteer and local firefighters who saved my house, family and property from a fire near my home on Pittman last weekend. The cause of the fire was thought to be a campfire that got out of control on a little island between two tributaries on the Little Susitna River that abuts my acreage. This is a place my family loves to enjoy.
I came home from work that Friday evening to see plumes of smoke on the lower part of my property. Soon, a helicopter arrived, then a massive number of firefighters followed by planes flying overhead. The firemen had to access the lower part of my land from the top part on Pittman.
They came back daily for nearly a week to monitor and cut away hot spots and smoldering foliage, working 12 hours a day most days. My house was in jeopardy only on the first day and they worked quickly and for long hours to ensure the fire didn’t reach my home and family. I am forever grateful and thank them from the bottom of my heart.
