In considering the subject of evolution, one thing that becomes evident to the thinking individual is the conviction among its adherents that it must be right.
Not that it is, mind you, but that it must be.
I use the word “conviction” here to note the degree of intensity to which their belief has grown; conviction denotes a belief so deeply held that one would even die for it, as opposed to an opinion, which can be changed on a whim. It must be said here that just because a belief is held as a conviction does not guarantee that it is founded upon fact or that it is truth, it is merely the intensity of one’s belief. As such, it can easily be seen that the deceptive can demonstrate great intensity of belief through dishonesty and the naive can portray the same through ignorance.
Why then must evolution be right?
Well, it is not because it is science, or even scientific. While the Bible calls it “science falsely so called,” it is unscientific to reject knowledge just because it does not support the conclusions you wish to reach. The root meaning of the word “science” is simply “to know” — knowledge. If knowledge is truth, it stands undaunted by the revelation of more truth because as truth, it has nothing to fear. Truth does not change.
Knowledge rejected, on the other hand, is evidence of fear and falsehood. The truth is that pure science is unbiased and neutral in its posture toward all knowledge and it forms its conclusions based on the whole, not on the part.
Yet evolution is exclusionary, and indeed must be. While evolution itself is an argument against Genesis chapters 1 and 2, the Biblical account of creation, it cannot survive if Genesis chapters 6 through 9, the Biblical account of Noah’s flood, is literally true. Evolution is a naturalized explanation of why our earth appears the way it does. Modern man looks around him and wonders how it got to where it is, and since he was not there, all he can do is guess. And because of other natural processes that he can measure, he speculates that given enough time, everything can be explained through natural processes.
Trouble is that even time cannot explain everything, yet a global flood can and does.
While evolution postulates that sedimentary layers were laid down over multiplied millions of years, what it cannot explain is the presence of fossilized trees running through multiples of these layers located around the globe, but Noah’s flood can. And while the Mecca of evolution remains the Grand Canyon for the sedimentary layers that are open for all the world to see, we now know even this could have been formed in a short period of time (and thus Noah’s flood) thanks to the eruption of mount St. Helen’s in Washington state.
Add to these all the legends from ancient civilizations that talk about a flood, a large boat and eight people and you can see why Noah’s flood is more than just a threat.
Simply put, evolution must be true because they have no other alternative. Period. Genesis 1 and 2 are called myths, not because evolution has been proven true, but because they declare that a self-existing God has created a universe so broad that its breadth is beyond man’s vision and a microscopic realm that he is only now beginning to see.
And if this weren’t enough, it is a creation that is beyond man’s imagination and comprehension in that God did it in just seven literal days. But even this would be paltry if it weren’t for Genesis 3, 4 and 5 in addition to chapters 6 though 9. You see, it is in these chapters that we are told that mankind is responsible to his Creator for its own bad behavior. Whether it is disobedience in chapter 3, murder in chapter 4, or just plain wickedness in chapter 6, the Bible declares that man’s maker has every right to judge man’s behavior.
The truth is that if evolution is not true then the Genesis account is, and all those who have put their faith and confidence in evolution must now face the wrath of the God of their hatred. Someday they will have to stand before him, but then it will be too late.
Evolution, then, must be true — not because it can be proven or creationism disproven, but because there is a God out there they just really don’t want to meet.
