WASILLA — The Clock Tower in downtown Wasilla was vacated Friday night as emergency response crews investigate a possible leak of an unknown source and substance.
The surrounding block was also sectioned off as authorities with Anchorage hazmat crews inbound to assist the Mat-Su Borough hazmat team, Mat-Su Central Fire Department, Borough EMS to determine what type of leak is occurring, according to Mat-Su Borough Emergency Services Director Ken Barkley.
Barkley said the call came from a person inside the building who was feeling sick and concerned there was a leak.
Other law enforcement agencies such as the Alaska State Troopers and the Wasilla Police Department are also on the scene directing traffic.
The incident led to several people who were inside The Clock Tower being sent to the hospital for medical treatment, according to Barkley.
“That’s what we’re trying to find out right now, but it’s making people sick. So, there’s something going on. We just need to figure out what and why,” Barkley said. “I can’t even tell you the last time we’ve had something to this extent.”
