With only 3 days left in the Trim to Win challenge, I decided I wouldn’t weigh myself this week and simply wait for the final weigh in on Tuesday, so I have no idea how I did this past week.
I’ve kept up my eating plan and have exercised, although not as much as I should have, I’m sure. I went to the gym today but didn’t work out on any of the equipment. AT&T Sports Center held its grand opening festivities today, so I took my 5-year-old grandson down for balloons and face painting. We did throw some baskets with the cute little souvenir basketball given to us as we walked in the door, so that should count for some exercise for the day.
This blog site is set to expire after Tuesday, but if there is enough interest out there, I would consider moving this over to our regular blog site.
I’m excited to see the final statistics from this challenge and hope this event served as a springboard to better health for many in our community. Alaska has one of the higher rates of obesity in the United States, ranking 18th in the nation in 2005. It’s a growing epidemic (no pun intended) for the younger generations, many who are being raised on video games instead of physical activity as a source of entertainment.
Television has also replaced physical activity in many households, and not just for the youth in our community. If we all laced up our tennis shoes and walked for 30 minutes or more a day instead of watching one television program, our waists would shrink even without adjusting our eating habits.
I know it’s hard to think of outdoor activity on days like today when the snow is flying, but there are many indoor activities you can substitute for that outdoor walk. The bottom line is that you just have to move, and walking from the recliner to the refrigerator doesn’t count!
Even if I don’t quite make my 30 pound weight loss goal by Tuesday, I know I’ve dropped many bad habits during the course of this challenge. I’m eating healthier, I’m exercising more (heck, just exercising period!), I’m parking farther away from my destination, I’m walking more and, most importantly, I’m feeling much better.
